Believe! - The Faroese Missionaries of Greenland
Oqqiffik, which means "warm" in Greenlandic, is the name of a Christian camp run by Faroese missionaries since 2013 for young Greenlanders aged 7 to 18 from a region in the southwest of the country. During the four weeks of the camp, children come and go every week. They arrive by "The Mission" mostly from Qaqortoq but also from surrounding villages. The Faroese, for their part, generally stay for periods of 15 days. They come with their families or some alone, but all aim to entertain and care for the children and bring them the Word of God.
The camp is completely isolated, both geographically and due to the non-existent telephone network. These children are offered a secluded stay, cut off from all communication with the outside world. Each person is thus completely devoted to the camp, with no other distractions than the afternoon activities and the religious songs repeated during Bible study. Twice a day, one hour before lunch and one hour in the early evening, these Faroese preach to the children on topics such as the creation of the Earth or Adam and Eve, as well as the crucifixion of Jesus.
The stories of these children are, for the most part, tragic: Greenland is a land where poverty, alcoholism, and other drug addictions are quite widespread. Many of these children are orphans, have no father or mother (due to family reasons or suicide), or live with their grandmother. These are mostly troubled children who, through the camp, find the affection they lack and comfort from the young leaders who take care of them all day and whom they call "Dad" or "Mom" from the second day. They also find a spirituality that reassures and consoles these young people within this large, seemingly "luxurious" house.
The camp is almost free for these children, who come to spend part of their school holidays an hour and a half by boat east of Qaqortoq. Everything is covered financially by "La Mission Chrétienne" or through material, food, or logistical donations from the Faroese.
It should be noted that this small territory of 50,000 inhabitants, the Faroes Islands, has the highest percentage of missionaries in the world. It is a very religious, fairly conservative territory that is still very influential politically but also wealthy and devotes a lot of time and energy to spreading a Christian message from the Protestant branch of Christianity. As a result, they are present on every continent and preach in various ways, whether through camps like this one or directly within local churches.
